New cathode binder to replace NMP

The Cellforce Group is a German joint venture between Customcells and Porsche AG to develop the next generation of battery cells for electric vehicles. The group now entered into a partnership with the US-based materials specialist PPG Industries with the goal to develop an innovative binder for cathodes that allows to replace the controversial solvent N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP).

According to Torge Thönnessen, CTO of Cellforce Group, "the use of a new type of cathode binder provides various benefits for battery production and brings positive features for the cell itself”.
